I wear them and my boxers are between 40 and 42.
Hm, the brand of boxers that I purchase are size small and I wear pants at a waist size of 30 inches, so 34 or 36 sounds a little small to be an extra-large. I'm only guessing now, but I would think that an extra-large would be closer or exceed 40 inches.
It could vary from brand to brand, too.
