Is depression something you just learn to live with?!

Question: NO !!!
Depression is very treatable, and there is no reason to put up with it.

Depression is a biochemical imbalance in the brain. It can and should be treated.
Nobody would get down on a diabetic seeking treatment for a biochemical imbalance in their pancreas, so why should the brain be treated differently ? And yet, ignorant idiots make fun of it, refuse to take it seriously, and are very hurtful to those who suffer from it.
Anyone who says you should just get over it is a callous unfeeling swine who thinks other people's pain is not real.

Left untreated, depression can ruin or shorten a life. This is tragic since it is avoidable.

See www.nami.org and www.dbsalliance.org as both have a lot of information on their websites.
Both organization run support groups, which are very helpful. Talking to someone who has been where you have is a great help.

Talk therapy, aka psychology, aka counseling, is also beneficial. You do need to find a counselor with whom you can connect; do not be too timid to change if one isn't working out for you. Cognitive behavioral therapy is considered the best; the aim is to learn how not to have the negative thoughts, to turn them around.

Medications can also help. You do NOT need to be a basket case to get or to benefit from medications. Mr Scissorhands is just wrong.
Since we are all different, and our metabolisms are not all the same, it can be take a while , and be frustrating, to get the right dosage of the right drug or drugs, but it is worth it.
If your income is too low to cover the medications, most manufacturers have programs to get you the meds free or at reduced price.

Do not give up on yourself ! You DO have value, you CAN contribute, and you CAN be happy. The sun WILL rise, and the light in the tunnel is NOT an oncoming train.
You deserve a good life, and you can get one.
May you have the very best luck, and may the God of your choice be with you.

However, while depression is treatable, a depressive must be vigilant after recovery lest depression return. I know one guy who has been out of his depression for a decade, but still takes a low dose of medication, and still goes to support group meetings [though partly because he wants to help others].
In some ways it is kind of like alcoholism [the two are definitely related] in that recovery is a lifelong thing. But so is living.

I don't think so...

Shouldn't be.. there are so many different ways to help. Talking to a psychologist, going on antidepressants, cognative behavioral therapy... the list goes on. There is no need to suffer!

If the drugs and therapy don't work, then yes. There are some mental diseases which are chronic.

I had it 2 years ago, I was miserable ofcourse, nothing you shouldn't want to reach out for help for. If I lived with it, God knows where I'd be now. But I got help and God was with me through it all, so I'm good now :)

well mate i been depressed most of my life i am only 17 i just live with it my parents say go to the doctors but i never do i am suffering even to this day. After a while every 1 gets sick of me so i just hide the depression but it is still there inside me all the time

No, you can improve your life. There is plenty of things you can do to lead a happier life which do not include taking pills or "learn to deal with a miserable existence.".

Don't take anti-depressants. They will mess you up more than they will help.

No man, that would be a really sad existence. There are lots of options for help but they all start with a doctor. Doc will have a lot of answers but most importantly will know who to see about it.

i heard something incredible the other day.,..... when you are exercising vigorously with great intensity, do you feel depressed????not likely..... for a while after words you feel awesome!!!!!! invigorated and calm.....

exercise may be the key many people seek.......

Well, I sure hope so...
cause since my son who was born 3 months premature on 11-07-07 passed away on January 7th of this year, I've been really depressed. So, I just keep pushing myself forward. I start my CNA program tomorrow, so that's a start for me in getting back to a "normal" lifestyle. Lately I've been trying to surround myself with friends and family. Laughter really is the best medicine. People have been telling me that time makes things better...but, I don't believe that at all. It doesn't make the pain go away, it doesn't make me not want to cry, it doesn't heal my shattered heart. But, when I'm with my friends and family and they are making me laugh...I feel better. And, I also feel better when I'm able to talk to them and cry on their shoulder.

I don't believe in taking medicine for depression and I never want to go to a psychiatrist. I don't want to sit there and tell a person I've never met in my life my entire life story and then be analyzed by them...just not my cup of tea. Instead, I'd rather spill my guts to my loved ones...it's healing for me.

Depression is an illness that needs to be treated. Medication can help, but the best thing is talking to someone you trust, but who is not a friend or relative, because you can't be open and homest with them. Go to:
www.samaritans.org
Use the email link, or call them if you're in UK.

They are totally confidential and non judgemental.
Also they are non religious, despite the name.

Take care

Not necessarily.
I am depressed and still am somewhat.
Don't see just any psychologist. Most of them won't even do anything for you. Medication for depression isnt just something that can be handed out anymore, you have to be near insanity for a doctor to prescribe you something.
I just learn to live with it and sometimes it makes like kind of interesting.

yes....U learn to adapt....I don't think the world cares about anyone being depressed....too many ppl out there with too many problems.....I refuse to be a part of that problem....just swollow up ur feelings and move on....and If u can't then just move on anyways....nothing can be done...nothing needs to be done...
