dead weight as a hole make larger looking muscles because they work the smaller motor muscles as well as the major muscles. Dumb bells are even better at this. You can tell folks that lift only on machines-they don't have that thick look to their muscles. As far as your age-be care full. I would find out the heaviest weight you can lift for each excersise and cut that in half to become the heaviest weight you will lift in your work out. I know it sounds wimpy, but at your age, your joints aren't set 100%. you'll want to do 6 months of medium wieght and a lot of reps and sets with a lot of intensity. Don't grab **** in the gym-work out, 30sec. rest between sets-MAX!!!! work to exhaustion since you are not lifting your max. After 6mos to a year, your joints and bone structure should be able to handle a good all-out wieght training regiment! Eat well, drink water, and get a lot of sleep. Watch your posture too!!! (sounding like your mom! LOL!!!!) Muscle burns fat- so if you concentrate on great form, medium wieghts and good cardio at the start, you'll be a lot better off when you start a hardcore workout schedule! Good luck! (injuries keep you out of the gym!) If you feel pains in your joints-slow up, lessen the wieght and work on form!

since you're 13, you need to chill out on wightlifting.
it WILL stunt your growth.
cant ya wait till you're 17 or 18?

it depends on how much you strain your self if you workout to hard you will definately stunt your growth just take it easy dont go to you max otherwise it definately will stunt your growth, when you workout at that age you should see a trainer a couple of times to figure out you max and see what % of it you should do

no, there has been no scientific evidence that weightlifting stunts growth. most weightlifters have been stunted in growth because they take steroids.

Theres not really any such thing as doing "15 minutes on dumbells". What exercises are you doin? For the most part you will gain more muscle so yeah you will get bigger

It will make you stronger. And bigger.

Yes, that's possible. The weights might compress your disks in your back. However, the effect will be slight and not permanent.
