I used to think the same thing. But as ive grown to relize no it doesnt.
No, but it can lead to irritation.
By shaving against the grain you push the hair follicles in the opposite direction, so the stubble may seem coarser at first, but it won't make the beard itself coarse.
For the best shave, invest in a good straight razor and do one pass against the grain, then one with it.
It doesn't make your beard coarse, but it will make you more prone to ingrown hairs (which hurt).
