A question for men who use double edge razor blades?!

Question: So after doing some research on the internet, I became convinced double edge razors would give me a lot closer and smoother shave. It is certainly a lot closer but I get so many nicks and have to deal with letting the blood dry up before I leave my apartment.

Am I doing something wrong? Its quite inconvenient to always be cutting myself, I am considering going back to the triple edge razors (like Mach 3) - what is your advice?

My neck is very sensitive and that is the region I usually get the most cuts.

ADVICE?

Thanks!

I don't agree with most of what has been said so far. I have been using a double edge razor for a couple of years now, and it does take getting used to. The idea that each time you but in a blade to a double edge razor the angle is different is a bunch of bull -- how can it be, you put it in, screw or lock it shut (depending on the model) and its going to be at the same angle time after time.

I do agree you want to make sure you are shaving after a hot shower, or soak a warm washcloth in very warm water and let it soak on your face -- this is what old fashioned barbers do and its very relaxing, and is great for a pre shave ritual.

The most important thing to know is that you don't want to use the same amount of pressure as you would with say a Mach 3. Mach 3 blades are not high qaulity, and have to be dragged against the face to work. You want to use just a little pressure on your face with a double edge blade.

You also want to closely study your beard. don't go against the grain. Use confident smooth strokes with the direction of the hair.

Also, lather is key, you want to make sure you have a high qaulity shave cream. The stuff they sell at drug stores that cost 3 bucks is total crap. Bite the bullet and buy something in the 15 - 30 dollar range. First of all, the high qaulity creams sold in a tub last for months, and they are usually made somewhere in Europe, and to much higher standards than say a can of Nivea. Nordstrom has some high end creams, as does the perfume and colonge shop Sephora. If you don't have these go looking around at men's grooming sites and invest in something good.

Also, look into getting a badger brush for your lather, you would be amazed what they can do. If there is a local Crabtree and Evelyn store near you, they sell them starting at 30 bucks.

Lastly, here are some links for some high qaulity blades:

There might be cheaper places to buy these, but its a start.

The initial investment to get better tools for the shave might seem like a lot, but its your face and you should treat it well.

Also, here is a tutorial from the same site as the blades, it could help as well:

Try them all, see what you like best.

I have very sensitive Skin and I use the Fusion Razr it gives me that close shave it also makes it nice and smooth.

The more blades the less irritation and cuts because u have more surface area so when u push the razor to ur face with more blades u apply less pressure. It causes less irritation and cuts. So if u have sensitive skin use 5 blade ones. Also try not to shave the same place over and over. Cut ur beard with one move without using too much pressure.

Changing brands or types of shaving cream may help. Be sure to use hot water. Do not use a blade for too many days. An old blade is dull and can skip and gouge.

I have never encountered that problem, but then again I only shave after I shower.Wetter the better!

Part of the reason those other razors work better is because the blades are set at a specific angle. This allows them to shave off the hair without cutting into your face so much, if at all. Double edged razors you have to insert the blade manually, so the blade isn't always going to be at the same angle. And it will never be at the angle found on those other razors, it will always be sticking out more towards you rather than pointing downwards away from you. So the chances of cutting yourself with them greatly increases.
