I'm getting a vasectomy.?!

Question: I'm not sure what to expect. Anyone had experience with this procedure? Is it painful? How long to recover?

Very good. You will never regret it!

I had mine done 20 years ago. It was nothing. I had it done on Friday. I drove myself home. I was back to work on Monday. After a week, you would never know it was done.

It never hurt.

I have no scar, and no after effects. As far as I can tell it is completely undetectable. I have my sperm count checked every 5 years. It is still zero.

One last thing. I never had children. I don't want them. That is why I had the surgery.

Don't forget the bag of frozen peas of ice. Report It

  • It kinda hurt for a day or two, and my testicles swelled up to the size of grapefruit. But an ice bag helped, and soon, it was over, and no more condoms!

Just sit on a block of ice for a couple of days (and ask for vicodin) and you'll be fine dude.

My husband had it done (the scalpel version). You have to wear support underwear to prevent any jarring. My husband sadi the procedure and recovery was much easier than he expected. He went to work the same day. (He has an office job.) He went for the check-up about a week later. By that time the self-disolving stitches had already come out on their own. He didn't do any of the lab work though. The idea of bringing in samples was too much. So, he could still have swimmers. (I do not recommend this approach!)

Husband had one done thirty years ago and has never regretted it for a minute. He was bruised and swollen for about 24 hours but within three days he was back at work.

It's the kindest thing you can do for your wife.

Word is it's not such a major ordeal. By the way, are you aware that most cases of prostate cancer (not all) occur in men who have had vasectomies?

After the vasectomy you should rest for 48 hours, even if you don't feel like you need to. Most men can return to work by the second or third day after the procedure. If your work involves heavy labor you should take up to a week off, but if you do light work you can get away with just a few days off.

After the vasectomy procedure there may be some soreness and some men take a mild painkiller. Others report that they experience virtually no pain afterwards.

However, all men should follow these instructions during the first week after the vasectomy procedure:

    * Stay off your feet as much as you can for the first two days.
    * Use an ice pack on your scrotum for 20 minutes every hour (except when you're sleeping) for the first two to three days after your vasectomy. You should repeat the icing as often as you can in the first week. You can make you own ice pack by putting ice in a plastic bag and wrapping it in a dishtowel, or use a bag of frozen peas. Gel packs also work well.
    * Do not strain yourself. Do not have sex or lift anything heavier than 10 pounds.
    * Keep the incision clean and dry. It is acceptable to take a shower or bath after the first day.
    * Wear your scrotal support for the entire week unless doing so causes you discomfort.
    * Leave some clean gauze with antibiotic ointment applied at the opening in the scrotum for a day or two.
    * Call your doctor if you notice ongoing bleeding or a swelling bigger than a marble around the opening or in the scrotum. A slight leakage is normal, and is not the same as steady bleeding.
    * Call your doctor if you get a fever, your scrotum gets very red or you notice any unusual discharge.

Vasectomy surgery is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Indian Med Guru Consultants. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. I have also read that they arrange financing for international patients, as all surgery is not covered by insurance or by the stinking NHS.

They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor I personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of Healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

My cousin got her IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatment; IUI surgery done there and she is more than very happy with the results. She is all praise for Indian Med Guru Consultants. She paid just 20% of the cost what she was quoted in USA and it was like a wonderful vacation for her. Hope this helps
