How soon after a gallbladder operation can I get back to the gym?!

Question: I've had my gallbladder extracted, which I'm glad of;And I know I can't do anything too strenuous for the next two to three weeks,But I have a rugby tour in 6 weeks time that I want to be prepared for .Would sprint training be ok in say 4 weeks?Similar experiances would be appreciated.

You should enquire with your GP. Did the nurses on the ward not give you information as to what you can and can't do post op? I think personally you are cutting it a bit fine at 6 weeks. If you had an open cholecystectomy that is going to take months to heal as they had to cut through the muscle of your abdominal cavity to get to your liver. If they did a laproscopic cholecystectomy they put titanium clips on the bile duct and the arteries and veins to and from the gallbladder. Too much strenuous exercise would put too much pressure on these clips, and you would be in danger of one of them coming lose and you'd end up bleeding to death especially if the arterial clips came off. Just give the rugby tour a miss for your own health.

ask your doctor.

ask your doctor! duh!

I have had my Gallbladder removed 2 years ago and I am glad it is out too, but mine took a couple of months to recover and I tried to do abit of running and I couldn't cos it was hurting to much.

If I was you I would start walking first briskly and see how you do with that and then try jogging and then see how you do but only do small things in small doses not all in one go.

But when I started running again after the op which was about 2 months later I ended back in hospital cos the stitches had broken and I had to get them redone again, the surgeon wasn't too happy when I went back in.

you should ask your doctor cause that seems a bit 2 soon

I agree with asking your dr as it will also depend on whether it was done keyhole surgery or open. Mine was done open and i couldnt have done it but they do reckon keyhole is less evasive, also it sounds like you are very fit healthwise so you may be able to be active sooner it all depends on your body and how quickly you are healing but personally i would not recommend rugby as its such a physical sport you could really hurt yourself

Good luck

sorry buddy you may not be ready for the tour, everyone is different but doctors here have a habit of overestimating the speed of recovery.

If it were me I would take it easy for a few months.

By the way some doctors leave a metal clamp behind (inside you) check wether this is the case (x-ray ) and if it would affect any future scan.
