Trouble Falling asleep at night?!

Question: I'm 17 year old male. And i'm having trouble falling asleep at night. It takes me anywhere from 45 min. To two hours. Any suggestions? I don't drink caffine for atleast 4 hours before going to bed and I usually read or watch TV for about 15 min before trying to sleep.

I wouldn't recommend taking prescription medications BEFORE you try a natural therapy to see if it works first.

First of all, DON'T watch tv in bed, keep that for the living room.

Make the bedroom ONLY for sleep and sex(if applicable).

You can try valerian root capsules in the recommended dose or melatonin.

Also, try to sleep at around the same time each night.

Your on the right track by means of avoiding caffeine 4 hours before bedtime. Are you taking any other meds that can keep you up? Meds that can do this for example are ADHD drugs which are uppers.

What about anxiety? Do you have some ? Ask yourself these questions. If you do , then try means of destressing, such as meditation, hypnosis, yoga and breathing exercises.

Hmmm, that's about all I could think of for now. And this is coming from someone with a history of sleep problems.

dude is something in your mind
are you worried about something
all i can think of is just watch tv or do something until you get really tired and then go to bed

go to bed just when you are drained so you fall asleep fast

try something like reading a book before u go to sleep ( i no it sounds boring lol) or just something without bright lights

hope this helps

Tense up all your muscles then relax each one one at a time. Push everything out of your mind, if something enters, push it out. Sleep

relaxing music
hot tea
yoga/workout

u might just have a overactive brain at that time. i have heard maturbating can help u sleep wether ur a girl or guy. sont worry everyone does it.

or make a hot drink and but a bit of alcohol in it that will do the trick

Try not drinking coffee for at least 8 hours before going to bed. Some people are a little more sensitive to caffeine than others.
Also, try not to stimulate your mind too much before sleep. Don't read an exiting novel or anything.

I know it sounds old school, but a glass of warm milk really can help. It contains tryptophan. (same thing in turkey that makes you feel drowsy after a thanksgiving meal.)

well what i did was i stopped trying so hard to go to sleep and boom i was out like a light....it had alot to do with me being young i had all this energy... just don't worry about it cause that makes it worse just know that its normal...also try not spending to much time in your room leave it only for sleep that helps too. and if that fails try having a nice warm cup of chamomile tea that will put you to sleep and you will sleep good and wake up so refreshed..

Read your text books. This puts me to sleep pretty quick. But seriously, try to establish a bedtime routine. Something relaxing that you do every night before bed. This will help tell your body it's time for bed. I go into my dark bedroom and stretch for 10min. Since I started, I've had no trouble getting to sleep. Reading for real though can be your routine. Whatever it is, make sure it is calming and hopefully in low light. If you lay down and can't get to sleep for like 15 min, it's better to get up and redo your routine then to lay there with no results.

Also, see if you can give yourself more like 30-60 min of no tv before bed. When you're laying in bed, try concentrating on your breathing. Focus on taking slow, deep breaths. If you're stressed, keep a pad and pen next to your bed to write down things so you can worry about them later. Sometimes I try to imagine EVERYTHING I did throughout the day and this sometimes gets my mind wondering enough that I fall asleep but it's not 100%

to cure your problem, you need to change some habits like :

Trouble sleeping at your age is unusual. Are you on a strange sleep schedule? Are there any emotional or physiological issues that you should be dealing with?

Assuming that its none of the above you might try the old milk and cookies trick. It actually does work as the cookies provide a very short term sugar rush. When that wears off you tend to get drowsy and that may be enough to allow you to fall asleep.

Of course there IS one other physical activity that I recall using to help me feel sleepy pretty regularly when I was a teenage male.

Do something during the day that drains your energy. If not get sleeping pills.

Here's a very good tip that works, get some hole meal bread and a head of Lettuce chop it up and make a sandwich eat it with a small class of water not much as you don't want to be up taking a pee all night ,do this for a week and you will fall off to sleep good luck

Do think about falling asleep or even try to. When you feel tired, go to sleep. It helps me.
