growth plates are located where a bone has to grow. They are usually at the ends (just before the actual joint area) of long bones, and where the bone has to grow out of the long bone (like trochanters, and epicondyles). Vertebrae are irreguar (a classification, like long, flat, etc), and while the bones will grow, There are no major growth plates there.
That doesn't mean you can't injure the bone.
