Vistaril is an antihistamine and antianxiety agent. It is prescribed for nausea, vomiting, anxiety, tension, agitation, itching caused by allergy, and sedation. It also is a muscle-relaxing antiemetic (antivomiting), bronchial dilating, pain relieving and antispasmodic problems, used for stress due to dental or surgical problems, acute emotional problems, anxiety associated with heart disease, and skin problems. My husband was given it for itching due to psoriasis. It will make him sleepy, it does my husband. It can also cause your sinuses to get too dry because it is an antihistamine. It has side effects that can be life threatening like breathing difficulties, chest tightness, wheezing which all are signs of a drug sensitivity reaction. Changes in heart rhythem have occured. It depresses the central nervous system so don't take with alcohol, tranquilizers, sedatives or other antihistamine products or CNS depressants. It produces sleepiness and drowsiness.
