Yes, I have that problem sometimes too. They get so hard until even the slightest rub against something is so intense. It is normal.

The things that cause nipple erection are pretty much the same in both sexes: sexual arousal and/or orgasm, cold temperatures, friction from clothing, embarrassment, excitement, feeling self-conscious, etc. It shouldn't be a problem unless it rubs against your clothing a lot and gets sore, or is too obvious from the outside (wear clothing that flattens your nipples and does not slide over them).
