Why are gay men's voices different?!

Question: Like, I've noticed they're slightly higher pitced. Something to do with the voicebox?

I've seen a documentary that chronicles the life of a young boy (Darren) and his friends between the ages of 7 and 15 years old. With himself as a wannabe filmaker in the 80's and splicing together home videos throughout his childhood, he gives the audience a very good look at the life of a boy who grows up to be gay.

This film is one of the things that totally convinces me that people are born gay! From the start, it's obvious that the kid is gay from the age of 7 from the way that he talks, presents himself and all of his mannerisms. Once he gets into the preteen-teenage years, it's clear that he is naturally attracted to boys instead of girls. There is nothing at all to indicate that is was a "learned" behavior and his younger brother ends up being completely straight which only further convinces me. It's pretty funny, entertaining, disturbing and very enlightening if you have ever questioned what makes gay people gay.

Check it out if interested! It's called Put the Camera on Me.

To answer the question, I believe that the "gay accent" or lisp comes naturally for many gay guys who grow up being more effeminate and possibly a learned (or reinforced) way of talking once they are accepted in an openly gay environment. But the voice itself is not the result of biology (ie: voice box being shaped any different). Many gay guys talk perfectly "normal" or masculine and a lot of straight guys can emulate the stereotypical gay voice pretty effortlessly.

i guess so..

no, they just talk that way
any grown man can put on a girly voice, ive seen it

maybe......{uncertain}
but i don't think it'll affect the voicebox!

They are scientifically more fruity.

maybe its put on, i mean they have certain type of acent as well like a posh one so i think its all about training themselves to think that is how a gay man is suppose to sound

I am of the opinion that most of them fake it to fit in with the gay community. These people are too wrapped up in the idea of what a gay person should be and who they actually are. For the love of god just be yourself!

I believe it's a learned behavior that they pick up unconsciously as children. They feel somewhat more feminine so they tend to emulate the women around them.

i have seen no evidence of this.

I always wondered that myself. Australian scientists finally proved my theory a few years back when they concluded it was a genetic predisposition.

So in a way the comment about estrogen levels, while not exactly right and somewhat funny, isn't too remotely far off.

ive always asked myself why they speak like that!

I have seen a boy i know "discover" he was gay - and his voice really did change the next day. It was really weird to watch - he became more feminine in his mannerisms too. I think you boys change is because they kinda think its just normal to do. Maybe its the media - on tv - gay men are portrayed in a flamboyant way and maybe young boys think its whats expected.

Its an interesting question

When I was 12 one of the more popular guys in the class told me to slightly raise my voice's pitch when talking to girls because it sounds sexier. I tested it out and it did work but i cannot be really to sure. It could be the cultural implications of the higher pitched voices (read up on the greeks they had a load of beliefs on stuff like that) or it could just be way of showing fertility. Of course some just do it for attention so I doubt we will ever really know the truth- but I would bet a mix of all of these theories and a few more perhaps

some are, but not all... those that have, is because since they ever went into puberty, they started being gay... so their testosterone production stopped...

ive got no idae but their voices are funny

Hormones?

I'm gay and my voice is lower than most of my other boyfriends..

Yes because of what you said
