Shaving for the first time?!

Question: I'm 18 and I've noticed that I need to start shaving my face. Should i buy an electric razor, or a normal one? Can anyone explain exactly how to shave? I know nothing, being the only male in the house...

I have tried all kinds of razors. It depends partly on the sensitivity of your skin.

I have pretty thick whiskers and a pretty heavy beard. For many years, I used a simple Bic razor (the orange ones) in the shower with no shaving cream. It's a double-blade razor but doesn't seem to clog up too badly. I'd only get 1-2 shaves out of a razor. At 18, you should be able to go 1-4 weeks if your beard is not too heavy.

I now use a 5-bladed razor with shaving gel, and I like that. The multi-blade razors are better than they used to be; they used to clog up a lot. I still shave in the shower.

I have used electric razors with a pre-shave lotion, and I liked them fine. But I lost the electrical cord during a move and never bought another one.

I find the old fashioned safety razor to work just as well and just as quickly.

Some people prefer to shave at the sink. In the shower, the warm water helps open up the pores on your face. I have done it this way for many years and would not go back to shaving over the sink.

After shaving, I use an aftershave gel because it doesn't sting or burn like some aftershave lotions. The liquid aftershave lotions are mostly alcohol and have a cooling effect that is designed to close the pores. A splash of cold water will do the same thing without the burn.

In a pinch, hand lotion will work for aftershave lotion.

i dont know im a girl.......

Hey, I was in a similiar situation a couple of months ago.

I tried to use an electric but it didn't work for me at first. I would recommend you get yourself a normal razor and some shaving foam to start off with and then move to an electric razor if you want.

Just apply a moderate amount of pressure to your face and shave - that's all there is to it. Wash the razor out after a few strokes if you use a normal one. If you go for an electric, clean the hairs from the inside.

Don't worry - there isn't really much to it.

electric definitely. Best of luck\!

I have never found an electric razor that was worth anything. My recommendation would be to buy the best razor that money could buy (there are times to save money, and this isn't one of them). I use the Mach3 razor - just about the most expensive one, but it does give the best shave, I think. I can't explain how to shave, but perhaps someone else can.

Normal the others give you razor burn

Get some shaving foam and a few cheap razors (more expensive as your beard becomes thicker).

Then, get a girlfriend and ask her to do it for you!

Nah, bowl of warm water in the sink to wash your razor with in between shaves, and bobs you uncle. Easy!

Never shaved a face only legs etc... Maybe talk to a mate, uncle or grandfather. I'm sure they wouldn't mind giving you a hand.

dont use electric, use a normal one, spray shaving cream on your face then shave it off. you could do it in the shower but if you havent got a mirror it could get messy. good luck and be really gentle so you dont cut yourself xx you could ask girls its the same as legs thats how i knew

i wouldnt use an electric one yet. Your skin will be soft and an electric will probably irritate it a lot.
Use a wet shave. Wet your face a bit, put a bit of shavin foam or gel on as well, then shave slowly and dont press down. Its important to shave in the direction that the hairs grow, not 'against the grain'. Just take it easy the first time you shave. There might be a couple spots of blood especially with a new razor but thats normal. My face still bleeds after over 30 years of shavin -but thats probably because I always shave in a hurry. Best o luck!

Buy a razor. Wash your face. Use shaving cream. Slide razor over beard. Remove whiskers. Repeat as necessary. It's not exactly rocket science.

i suggest manual blade.

I would use a electric razor to start so you are accustom to shaving before ever using the blade. Just for safety sake so not to nick your face. If your whiskers are soft and don't get the heavy 5 o-clock shadow, and electric is the best. Although a blade cuts closer is better for heavy beards not to get the 5 o-clock shadow. Which is a term meaning have to shave again if you are going out in the evening. The new razors today are much safer then my dads when was a teen. I started with a straight razor, and have the scars on my fingers to prove it.
