An after shave is a cologne and/or lotion that guys put on after they shave (Duh!). It makes the face feel less dried out and it's a way for a guy to wear something that smells nice.
Some guys like lotion based and some like alcohol based after shave.
You should pick one that you like and hope that it's mutual. Some fragrances can be overwhelming.
Take a trip to the cosmetic counter and do some smell-tests.
