What's it mean to have numbing in the arms/fingers?!

Question: A friend of mine recently woke up and had a numb arm and fingers, he went to the ER and they ran some tests. There was no stroke or heart attack, thank god. He has feeling back in all parts of his arm but two fingers. The er lady said it may have something to do with the fact he plays tennis a lot, and the repetitive arm motions may be causing some sort of nerve problems. He is going to the doctor soon.
Anyone heard of this or have experience with this?
Thanks.

Any time there is a sensation problem you have to think NERVE! Even if it is not a permanent injury loss of sensation is caused by nerve damage or compression, which makes the loss permanent, relative, or transient. Simple compression is termed "nerve palsy."
Repetitive motion injuries are usually disregarded when they happen because we say, well i do that every day! But the fact is exactly that, repetitive motion abuses one part of the body due to over use. Ever heard of "tennis elbow, shoulder, wrist" those are expressions associated with the game doe to prominence of the injuries in the sport.

In tennis, a repetitive change of topspin and slices can cause numbness because in both of those you need to use muscles you don't use very often other wise, some people do it unconsciously and don't exercise those muscles at all.

If he can learn to control his topspin and slice, he may be able to figure out what it wrong with him.

That would be the best bet to try, get him to work on switching every hit.

[I play tennis on a regular basis.]
