Well, sex's "purpose" is only marginally to bear children!. Sexual reproduction evolved and the pleasure mechanism, particularly for males, evolved so that men would find that promise to outweigh the danger of having sex (remember, we were not rulers of the earth for all time -- that came pretty recently -- when we were early hominids, then having sex meant we weren't watching for predators, and etc -- and thus were endangering ourselves, and our partners)!.
Given that the planet is already overpopulated, the primary purpose now is the pleasure - one hopes!.
