Making a complaint about hospital?!

Question: Making a complaint about hospital!?
My Grandad is currently in hospital with a bad urinary infection and has had to have tubes inserted into his bladder etc!. The other day my Mum found a plastic bag with a pair of pyjamas soaked in urine sitting in his locker!. We assumed it was his, but I wondered why it wasnt in a special orange bag for soiled items; it was in a not very waterproof bag!. The next day he was moved to another ward, and we found the same bag in his locker!. We asked the nurse, and when she went to look, apologised and said it wasnt even his pyjamas!!! My Mum didnt say much, but I was furious, as that urine soaked bottoms had been following him around!. He is really not very well and for all we know, the urine soaked bottoms could have been contaminated with MRSA or something! Should I make a formal complaint!? If so, how should I go about doing it!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

You should initially direct your complaint to the Hospital Manager, and if you still aren't happy get in touch with the British Medical Association or The Healthcare Commission!. (in UK) Keep copies of all correspondence, and records of any phone calls made!. Also a good idea to send all letters by recorded delivery, so if anyone says they haven't received a letter you can check whether it was actually delivered!. You should complain, not just for your grandad's sake, but also for the care of other patients at the hospital!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would definitely file a complaint!. That is disgusting!. If I was you, I would have had a fit when it happened!. I was also in the hospital because I needed stitches!. The room was dirty!. My mom called down the the housekeeping unit [because that is what she does at that hospital] and they came right up and cleaned everything!. I am not sure who you should file a complaint with, maybe the head of that particular unit [ like head of housekeeping, head of the answering service etc!.]!. I wish you and your grandpa the best of luck! I wish I could help more, but I can not!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your right that this is unacceptable but one of the first questions would be: 1!. Why didn't you bring the wet pyjamas to notice the day previous!? 2!. Why didn't you remove what you thought was his dirty laundry!? (patients laundry is not done by the hospital)
Also remember your Grandad is still a patient!.
Bring it to the ward sister's attention and be very vigilant re hygiene whilst Grandad is in hospital!. Hope he is soon better and home!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have to agree that the pyjamas were the families responsiblity to take home and wash but laso that it should have been reported on the first day!.

However, you are entitled to make a complaint!. You could either write (always write - don't just do it verbally) a short note highlighting the episode to both the charge nurses from each of the wards he was in and request a reassurance it won't happen again!. or you can go full throttle and write to the hospital patient-liaison officer who deals with complaints!.

I would advise the first one though!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I certainly would make a complaint!. I see you use the words "mum" and "Grandad!." Are you British!? I ask because it may be different over here in the states as to how to go about it!.

Were it me I'd get in touch with the chief hospital administrator and lodge a formal complaint!. See how they respond and then go from there!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You should definatly complain about this to the local NHS head office because this sounds like the sort of incident that they sweep under the rug when it is dealt with within the hospital!.

Just another wee thought report it to the local paper and see how they like the negative publicity cos that's a horrible thing to do to a sick person!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, I don't think a formal complaint is necessary - it sounds like it was a series of oversight and carelessness!. If you see this kind of behavior repeated, I would contact the nursing surpervisor or the Director of Nursing and discuss my concern!. That should be enough!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.

Edit: a little inside tip - patients with families who routinely and irregularly visit get better care, so keep visiting and show interest in the care he is receiving by asking questions!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Every hospital will have it's own complaints dept!. Write or email your complaint to the complaints manager!. There is a 20-day (working days) response time, as per NHS gvrnmnt targets!. Therefore you should expect your response within about 1 month!.

They are also obliged to suggest in their response how they will prevent the situation from recurring!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

perhaps your grandpa put it there himself and the nurses were not aware they were there !?
Contact the head nurse and the the top hospital administrator!.
We had problems late last year when my dad had his legs amputated and he fell out of bed!.The hospital called us the next morning, not right after it happened !Www@Answer-Health@Com
