Back pain - excerise helps?!

Question: Back pain - excerise helps!?
My boyfriend has had back pain for years, at one point he was on prescription medication for it!. I don't know if this info helps:

-He's actually considered to be underweight for a guy!. He has however put on thirty pounds since January, it appears to be mostly in his stomach area!. He used to have a very stressful and active job, but now he barely lifts anything!.

-Massage seems to help, so I guess it's a stressed muscle thing!. The pain is typically concentrated in the lower back!.

-Giving up smoking, I don't know if that does anything!.

-Seems to have less energy lately!. I'm not sure if that's due to decreased activity!.

So I was just wondering if someone had success with a non-medication treatment, my mother mentioned that exercise is supposed to help!. What should he be targeting!? Overall cardio stuff (wouldn't that be painful!?), or abs!? Or work directly on the back!?

Thanks!Www@Answer-Health@Com
