The doctor will tell you what he or she is going to do and will then ask you to lay on your side on the plinth and wil ask you to pull your knees up toward your chin and will then insert his gloved fingers and feel around the prostate gland to feel if it is swollen!. He wears wears a glove and inserts his finger into the rectum until he can feel the prostate gland - he then feels the shape for any lumps - when it's uneven and has a lump he will then do more testing!. Currently the best and most accurate method is through a biopsy, only when judged necessary!. There are routine blood tests to look for PSA levels!. Keep in mind that enlarged prostate does NOT necessarily mean cancer ! You can have an enlarged prostate but no lumps no cancer - there is a known medical condition for that and it can be treated with drugs if the gland gets big enough to obstruct urine or make it difficult to urinate or get it removed if it completly obstructs!. As you get older your prostate enlarges - it is common for older people to have an enlarged prostate and higher PSA, no cause for alarm, it does not mean cancer - as long as you get it checked and your values are within normal range!.
