Well, I'm Catholic (and since you're concerned with this, I assume you are religious too), so here's the view of the Catholic church:

Sex is something so special, and so precious, that we should do all we can to not abuse it!. God gave humans sex as a way to share in his ability to create life, and as a way to understand the beauty of mutual love and self-giving!.

So, because God gave us sex for that purpose, sexual acts should meet 2 requirements:
1!. They should be open to procreation!.
2!. They should be acts of loving union between a husband and wife!.

Masturbation meets neither of these requirements!.

Also, masturbation is, basically, selfish and pleasure-seeking, and any time you do something selfish and pleasure-seeking, you should reconsider what you're doing!.

However, I don't pretend that the Catholic church is right about everything, or even most things!. Such blind faith in a human institution is dangerous!. Also, I have no idea what religion you are, and telling you not to do something just because catholics say so would be wrong!.

All I can tell you to do is to listen to your heart and pray!. If you feel guilty or wrong about masturbation, stop!. If your heart doesn't feel bad about it, don't worry about it!. God gave us a conscience for a reason; he wants us to find our own way to get to Him!.
