Cold sores are usually (98% of the time) caused by the herpes virus hsv-1!.
Hsv-1 can be spread to the genitals where it can cause a genital hsv-1 infection!. Hsv-1 is less well-adapted to the genitals than the more usual genital herpes virus hsv-2, which means that though symptoms of hsv-1 and hsv-2 are identical, if you have hsv-1 down below instead of hsv-2 you are likely to have fewer outbreaks and be less infectious!.
An oral herpes infection caused by hsv-1 can spread easily to the genitals - and contrary to popular opinion, it can still spread in between outbreaks, just as genital herpes can!. The risk is lower when there is no cold sore, but there is still a risk of transmitting the virus to your partner's genitals!. Even after the cold sore is healed there is still a chance you could catch it from that person, but it is less likely!. And if you have a cold sore, the virus can be transmitted from your saliva!.
