Do Bowflex machines work?!

Question: Do Bowflex machines work?
I'm 16 year old, and I'm new to weight lifting. My father has a bowflex machine that I use but I recently found out that bow flex machines don't compare to free weights. I want to join a gym soon since free weights are so expensive, but until then, is it advantageous to do what I can on the bowflex machine

Answers:

Bowflex as a brand make a range of equipment some of which may work better than others. It's true that free weights (dumbbells, barbells, even kettlebells) are some of the most flexible bits of kit you can ever find, but there is a place for machines - though the less restrictive in their planes of movement the better.

It's easier to train to failure using free weights.
Machines can help you train in planes of movement that don't rely on direct effect of gravity.

The ideal is to use which ever is best for a particular routine. Personally I usually start my workouts with free weights but finish the session with a several (simple) machine based sets.

Wow, I'm surprised at the answer above me. I always thought they would work well and wanted one, but could never afford it.
