Do you use a ruler or a tape measure? And do you start from the base or vise versa?

Do like everyone just throw out a big number and you will fit in with everyone.
Tape measure from the base where it joins your scrotum. If you don't have a measuring tape, use a piece of string, then measure the string with a ruler.
from base to tip with anything that clearly labels length in a common unit.
(ruler, tape measure, yardstick, mens size 14 shoe, ect)
I've tried, but they don't make rulers longer then 50 feet.
