Good or bad flirting?!

Question: Good or bad flirting?
What if, from the corner of your eye, you saw a girl is staring at you, so you turn to look and she's still looking, but then quickly looks away, then she looks back at you Would you take that as a form of flirting or would you think it was just creepy?
This is the advice I've gotten from people to let a guy know I'm interested. But it seems sort of creepy unless you're smiling, and even then, what if he's paranoid that you're laughing at him or something.
There's gotta be a better way! Any suggestions of subtle flirting?

Talk to him, smile a lot, and put a hand on him while you're talking (somewhere safe, like on his shoulder). He'll get the idea. :)

Honestly, it's hard to predict what men will take as "flirting" and what men will take as "creepy". It depends on the man and it depends on the situation. In my experience, men (especially younger men) often tend to assume that a girl is flirting with them even when she's not. Men don't tend to jump to assumptions of "creepy" as much as women do.

However, if a man is a bit shy or insecure, you're right in that he might think that you're laughing at him rather than being serious. Insecurity is a big roadblock to overcome.

It will depend on what kind of guy you're looking for as well. If you want the shy guy, then you might need to be more forward in order to convince him that you're keen on him. If you want a confident guy who'll do all the chasing, then a subtle look across a room might be all the invitation he needs.

If you display enough confidence to just walk up to a guy and talk, then you may scare off the guys who are only putting on a bit of bravado, and who are actually a bit frightened of getting too close to a woman on an equal footing. A shy man might be relieved that you've taken the initiative (so he doesn't have to), and a truly confident man will not feel threatened anyway. :)
