Why do I feel my heartbeat here? Will it go away?!

Question: Why do I feel my heartbeat here? Will it go away?
Hello, I'm a male and the past 3 or 4 days I've been feeling a pulse/my heartbeat noticeably near the bottom of my hip. I looked at a sketch of anatomy (which I know little about) and I'm guessing the source is around the Cowper's gland? Here's the sketch I'm looking at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gray11…

Is this something I should be concerned about? Will this go away? It's really annoying when I'm trying to fall asleep. Thanks for reading.

Answers:

You have arteries throughout your whole body. Many of them are quite close to the surface of the skin, and we use these to take your pulse. Most of the common ones are well known -- the wrist, neck, etc. There is a major artery that goes down each leg, near the groin, and you can often feel the pulse there very easily.

Concerned? Why? It's a good thing you can feel the pulse there... when you can no longer feel it, then you should be concerned!! LOL When you are trying to fall asleep, I suggest not putting your hands in that area. If it is very pronounced that it is keeping you awake (why doesn't the pounding in your neck keep you awake?), then go see your doctor and ask about it. He is the professional and will know what is normal and what is not. Then you can put your mind at ease.
