Masturbation does not directly and essentially help get you to sleep.

However there are two factors which encourage sleep. Firstly, it is harder to fall asleep if one has worries or tensions. Masturbating helps to relieve those tensions and hence takes away the inhibitors to sleep. Secondly, the energy expended in masturbation and ejaculation cause temporary tiredness and thus also encourage sleep.



Not if you do it directly before going to sleep. You get your circulatory system all worked up, and it takes a while to calm down afterward. Sounds crazy, but it's exactly like exercising before going to bed.
