Hitting abs?!

Question:

Hitting abs?

so in alot of workout videos and training sesions for fighting alot of people hit their abs with a med ball repeatidly, why do they do this? is it benificial and is there any negative sideaffects?

Answers:

When something hits your stomach, your muscles there will react by flexing, to lessen the pain of impact. It can be benificial for a healthy person, because when you bring the object closer, the muscles flex reflectively, and then when you move the object away, they have a chance to relax.
If you hit your stomach, or any body part too hard, it can cause bruising, and possibly more serious damage. Really not a good idea for people with sensitive skin. Also, if you're all tired out, and you do this, your muscles might not flex completely, and that would hurt. Doing crunches does the same work to the abs, without as much potential danger.
