I don't know how big an "ego" is, but I don't think it's about size so much as it is about sensitivity.
Both males and females have egos. It's just that male egos are sensitive and brittle. Once a male ego has been challenged, threatened, stepped on, trashed, or severely poked, the reaction can be dangerous to all in the vicinity - male or female.
Smart females know this and learn, over time, what provokes a male ego. They wisely and kindly nurture that ego, without becoming a slave to it, and stay away from certain areas that are likely to cause an ego to react.
Stupid females know what provokes a male ego and use that knowledge to manipulate and control. They belittle and ridicule, or puff up the ego then stick it with a big pin and laugh while it deflates and goes flat.
The "why" part of your question suggests that men have a choice about whether they want an ego or not. They don't. It's just there. With practice, men can control the dark side of their ego and replace anger, malice, deception, greed, envy, and the pursuit of power with love, peace, and kindness. But, that takes time - and the support of a "smart" woman can make a huge difference in how successful a man is in that quest.
