How do I get my friend to stop drinking?!

Question:

How do I get my friend to stop drinking?

I saw him the other day for the first time in 6 years. I didn't recognise him because of the weight-gain and bloating. He was very confused and disorientated, told me his liver was on the way out, and was very aggressive and sweating badly, He told me in all seriousness that he was drinking 30 pints of lager a day (I find this hard to believe), but will not confront the problem, instead just saying "that's the way it is." All his friends have given up on him because he's so offensive, possibly because he's now mixing valium, antidepressants and huge amounts of booze. He's having fits upon withdrawal, so is in a really, really bad way. When I asked him to stop drinking, he told me to "get cancer you arrogant c**t." Hmmm.

PS I am a recovering alcoholic, so I do have total sympathy...

Answers:

If you are a recovering alcoholic then you will know there is very little you can do to help him. That decision to stop drinking has to come from him. I don't suppose you could get him along to an AA meeting can you. It seems as though he already has a death wish. I know it seems hard to accept, but there are some people you just can't help. Eventually as you well know, the alcohol will kill him, and I don't suppose he is too worried by that. I know it must seem hard to you to watch him kill himself slowly, but really all you can do is to be there to help him if he asks for it, other than getting professionals involved there is little you can do.
