Question:

I want to know when bulking up should you bulk up then lose the fat or should you lose fat then bulk up?

or is it possible to do both of them at the same time

Answers:

It is not possible to gain large amounts of muscle and lose large amounts of fat at the same time. You can gain large amounts of muscle and lose small amounts of fat, or you can lose large amounts of fat and gain small amounts of muscle. It largely depends on routines, diet, and genetics.

So long as you are not obese to begin, bulking first is definitely the way to go. Each extra pound of muscle burns between 10 and 50 calories per day, depending on your activity level. So if you gain 20 pounds of muscle and each pound burns 30 calories per day extra, that's 600 calories per day you will burn extra! Practically, if you bulked up 20 pounds and then ate just like you did before you started bulking, that's more than a pound of fat per week you would lose when you start cutting (losing weight). I personally went on a bulk cycle this past year and the excess fat has just slid off!

However, it is important NOT to gain lots of fat while bulking. You should eat good, clean, healthy foods like chicken and white and brown rice, not french fries and Big Macs. You will gain some fat along with the muscle, but no less than 50% of the weight gained should be muscle- keep checking how you look in the mirror and use a caliper to check body fat levels.

Almost all the greats in bodybuilding history have repeatedly bulked and cut- there aren't too many that straight up gained muscle.
