Answers:

Good question. There really is no simple answer to it though.

Firstly, a jockstrap is not the most comfortable type of underwear and generally only used for sports. If given the choice most guys would not wear one when another option exists. However, at the end of the day, a jockstrap is the "safest" type of underwear to play for physical activity and that sense of security can make it "comfortable" for the wearer. You get used to it after you wear it for about 20 minutes or so. The jockstrap is mainly for support of the balls so that they are not injured when running, jumping, basketball, tennis, etc. Wearing a jockstrap is the equivalent of a girl wearing a sports bra.

A cup is usually worn inside of a jockstrap (there is a small compartment that a cup fits into the jockstrap). A cup is usually a harder plastic shell that covers your boys and protects them from impacts. A cup should be worn for sports like American football, football (soccer), rugby, baseball, and hockey. Wearing a cup is a little less comfortable than just a jockstrap because the cup is hard and you feel it more. However, the cup is extremely important in impact sports. You can still feel a kick or impact to the balls when you wear a cup, at it isn't pleasent at all. But it isn't nearly as bad as it would be without the cup. You don't get the same "stinging" sensation or abdominal pain as you would getting hit without one.

Most guys don't get erections when wearing uncomfortable underwear. However, in the rare instance that they do, the decrease in room would make it even more uncomfortable and the erection probably wouldn't last very long.
