You need protein shakes before and after the gym. In the gym you need to be doing low number of reps with heavy weights. You need to really stress the muscles to make them rebuild bigger. 3 sets of 5 reps of a weight you can only just lift 5 times is a good routine to start with. Once you get more experienced you will start devising your own routine built around your specific needs.
Track down Muscle and Fitness magazine. There's always good stuff in there for getting big and strong.
