The 'no scalpel' method is a single entry, done with something other than a scalpel. I don't know, because I have not had one. I have talked with 5 people who have, three with the single and two with the double-incision. The later two had a much more uncomfortable/longer recovery time. One even got a serious infection. The three with the single incision had <48 hour recovery, one was even back to work next day.

I met with a urologist yesterday. He is in my HMO network. He does the double incision. I walked out after canceling the actual procedure - mainly because he was a jerk, but I am afraid that if there are no urologists who do the single-way in my HMO, I may be out of luck.... But I wanted to hear from some experience before I went one way or another..

Answers:

My MD did a single incision approach and it went very well. The procedure wasn't painful, felt like someone else tying your shoes. But, remember that following the vas, ice is your friend. They say ice for 1 or 2 days, but 3 or 4 is more accurate, so take a few days off work. It does hurt. So take your pain meds as directed. In my opinion, the idea of having a vasectomy one afternoon and then working the next day is ludicrous. It can be done, if you don't mind your scrotum swelling to the size of a grapefruit. I work in a clinic and have assisted with a few vasectomies, and as I said, have had one. Either type of procedure you choose will be fine. Be sure to go to a MD (urologist) who does them regularly. Rent some movies, pick up that book you've been meaning to read, take a few days off, and remember the ice. No worries
