What type of exercises can I do to get in great shape even though I have a problem with sciatica?

A couple of years ago I got in the best shape of my life. I was 30 at the time and at 6 feet tall I had gotten up to 205. My body fat percentage was around 25. I got all the way down to 168 and around 12 percent. In the process I managed to hurt my back and the doctor said it was my sciatic nerve. I gained all my weight back plus 10 lbs after the injury. At 215 I decided to try weight watchers and have gotten back down to 188. I am still not in the kind of shape I would like to be. I want to be in excellent shape but everything I do as far as exercise bothers my back. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what type of exercises I could do without causing futher strain to my lower back. Thanks for all replies

Many doctors recommend swimming for people with back problems because it creates no impact to your back.

You should also see some specialist and determine if there are options to improve the sciatica problem.
