Is dips a good excerise to get a big chest?!

Question:

Is dips a good excerise to get a big chest?

and how often should they be done, and approx how long would it take to get mass

Answers:

Dips ARE a good chest workout, though they also work the shoulders and triceps...they DO NOT however work your back as a previous poster stated (unless you're doing them wrong).

Dips are a pretty good end of a chest, shoulder, or tricep routine in order to work the muscle group to exhaustion (which you should be doing if you're trying to build mass).

In order to better isolate the pectoral (chest) muscles you can lean forward slightly during the dip...the more forward you lean, the more you work the chest.

All this being said, the best chest isolation movements are the bench press, the fly, and cable crossovers...all of which have several variations to isolate different parts of the chest.

If you are working your larger muscle groups (chest, legs, back) to exhaustion you should not work these groups more than once or twice a week depending on your own recuperative time. When you work a muscle you are actually causing micro-trauma...the muscle grows larger by repairing the damage you caused by working out. It's your body's natural defense system kicking in. You have to allow a few days for the muscles to repair themselves, or you won't see the gains you want.

As far as how long it takes to "get mass" that's already pretty much already set in your genetic code. Most of those bodybuilders you see on TV are either using illegal drugs to help enhance their physique or are just genetic freaks. Just use heavy weights (75-90% of your 1 repetition maximum weight and sets of 4-8 repetitions), vary your workout so your muscles don't get used to the routine (remember, you need to break 'em down to build 'em up), slightly increase your protein intake (this is what your body uses to rebuild muscle), eat 5-6 small, sensible meals a day, and do cardio like swimming, jogging, jumping-rope for 30-45min at least 3 times a week so that you will stay well-defined and actually be able to see the new "mass" you put on.

Hope that helps.
