What's a sperm count?!

Question:

What's a sperm count?

I heard it on tv what is it and how do u get it done? How do they do it?

Answers:

Its a measure of how many sperm you produce.

You ejaculate into a jar and then they take a sample.
The sample is placed on a special microscope slide which has a small dimple in it which only allows a certain volume of ejaculate.
Over the top is placed a glass cover which has a grid etched on it.
Then, looking through the microscope a technician will literally count the number of active sperm in each grid square.
This number is used to produce a Sperm Count which is basically the number of active normal sperm per cubic centimetre of ejaculate.

The sperm count is basically a measure of fertility. The sperm make up only a tiny part of the total fluid volume of each ejaculation and some sperm may be dead or deformed and unable to do the job. So the only way to accurately measure male fertility is to take a look at the sperm and count the healthy ones.

Normally a sperm count is only done if it is suspected that the man may have low fertility (e.g. he and his partner are unable to to conceive a child) or if some abnormality, injury or disease is detected which might affect the testes.
