STD is sexually transmitted disease but it has changed names and is now to be referred to as STI sexually transmitted infection. I'm thinking perhaps they changed it because of the increase in workplace STD (short term disability) but STI's can be transmitted through sexual contact with a person who is infected or through exchange of bodily fluid. most STI's can't live outside the body so you can't catch them from a drinking fountain.
