I am 18 years old and have not been circumsized, I would like to be, but i need !

Question:

I am 18 years old and have not been circumsized, I would like to be, but i need some info...?

First of all, how much pain can I expect?? Second, how long does it take to heal? Also how much can I expect to pay? Oh and what kind of doctor should i see about this??

Answers:

During the actual circumcision operation you'll be given a local anesthetic, so other than the anesthesia needle you won't feel any pain. The real pain comes from the 2-4 weeks of recovery afterwards, but that's what oral painkillers are for.

The healing process can be bothersome (I hear, I'm uncircumcised and intend on staying that way). The glans (penis head) will feel overly-sensitive - sometimes to the point of pain - as it rubs against everything. This sensitivity will probably give you a lot of erections, which can pull on the stitches and cause great discomfort, if not pain. Generally, the circumcision wound should heal in 2-4 weeks, but it may take a month or longer for the sensitivity in the glans to become bearable.

For a circumcision you would have to consult a urologist, though sometimes other doctors are qualified (but since it's not under their specialty, it wouldn't be recommended). A circumcision costs several hundred dollars, and depending on the state, the insurance, and the doctor performing it, you may have to pay $200-600.

If you want to get circumcised mainly for cosmetic or social reasons, I suggest you reconsider. The foreskin has many nerve endings that can contribute to sexual sensitivity (link 1). Furthermore, several studies indicate that the foreskin may play a role in the sexual satisfaction/pleasure of not only the man, but the woman as well (links 2, 3, 4). So if your foreskin is working normally, things might not be as good afterwards.

If your motivation to get circumcised is because there's some medical reason (like a really tight foreskin) then you should know there are cheaper, simpler, and painless treatments (links 5, 6, 7).

So please take a look at the links before making any definite decision, as this isn't something you should consider lightly.
