Question:

Im 40 yrs old and in good health...recently ive noticed blood in my semen but no pain...what could cause this?

i have no blood in my urine, no pain during or after sex, and no pain or discomfort in my genital area...i have only been with one sexual partner for ten years but recently she had an unprotected affair...could this be associated with an std, colon cancer, or testicular cancer...im extremely concerned and embarrassed...please help

Answers:

Bloody semen is almost never serious (or, as many people first think, a sign of cancer). A minor infection can sometimes cause blood to appear in the semen. Occasionally, especially in older men, it's a sign of a prostate or other urological problem. In most cases, the blood disappears within three weeks. Blood in the semen is very common. It's usually benign.
See your doctor if you still see blood in your semen after three weeks or if you feel any pain during or after sex or urinating . Whether you have a minor infection or prostatitis, the prescription is usually the same: antibiotics, probably tetracycline or doxycycline.
During your office visit, your doctor may want to examine your prostate and perform a cystoscopy—an examination of your bladder and urethra with a small optical device. If the blood is persistent, they have to be sure you don't have a tumor or a polyp.
