Can you catch Hep B...?!

Question: from someone who has low levels, with anti-bodies present and no active infection thru unprotected sex?

a friend told me her boyfriend told her this, and that he could give her antibodies but the chances of active infection were low. the infected guy said that his last partners were tested and shown negative on tests.

i don't think this makes sense, but the info out there is conflicting. is this guy for real? i want my friend to get the right info, to reduce her worries.

any ideas? from professionals?
thanks!!!!!!

When you say no active infection, what do you mean?

If you mean his liver enzymes are okay and he's not yellow or having any other symptoms, he could still be infected and not know it, in which case it's possible for you to become infected.

If you mean he's been tested and his HepBSAg (hepatitis B surface antigen) is negative, you're in the clear. This test looks for the virus itself rather than your reaction to it.

Antibodies present can mean one of three things:
1. You were infected and cleared it.
2. You were infected and didn't clear it and are now chronically infected.
3. You've been vaccinated.

Speaking of which, vaccination significantly reduces your risk of becoming infected, but it doesn't work in some people the first time. My classmates and I were tested for immunity (via antibodies) to hep B when we started med school, and some of my friends who had been vaccinated weren't immune and had to be vaccinated again. You can ask to have your antibody titer measured to be safe.

Hepatitis B is nothing to mess around with! It can cause liver failure and/or liver cancer, either of which can kill you.

About my rating... I wanted to add that this probably doesn't mean my friend is necessarily in the clear. I'm still going to encourage her to get tested!

As far as what the results mean, I guess that would be determined by the blood test and any symptoms she could be having in the future. Report It
