im going to use a pig in this example. Its the same with all animals though

It depends what it is. Just like there are some diseases animals can pass, there are also things that are just animal bound. I am not 100% certain, but it's unlikely to pass things like a cold to a guinea pig human-to-pet, however, I still wouldn't be handling them.

Things like typical sinus infections and allergies are not contagious, even to people, but if you have something extreme, for your health, I would recommend to stay away from the piggies. If you're very sick, last thing you need to to be handling your pig, and I'm sure your pig wouldn't mind too. Illnesses like the flu are very severe even to people, and the last thing you'll want to do is be holding your pig (a real case of the flu is TERRIBLE!)

When you're sick with anything contagious, even a cold, wash your hands before handling anything involving the pigs (water bottles, toys, food etc) and make sure to wash afterwards to prevent you from getting even more sick, this is for both you and your pigs health. If you're sick, you don't need to be handling your pigs, but getting rest and taking medications.

Because winter time and usually dramatic weather changes is what usually starts the sickness period for anything, my advice would be to start stocking up on meds (for people) at that time, as well as things like feeding syringes, Qtips, and other medical supplies you may need for your pets if they get ill.

There are diseases that can spread between species, including to and from humans but most of the common ailments we get do not spread to animals through airborne means. As long as you don't exchange fluids (never advisable!!) your pets should be fine.
