Yes, you can get nipple discharge from having cysts. I have fibrocystic breast disease, and sometimes one of the cysts randomly "bursts" and it is very painful when that happens...and shortly after that happens, the discharge comes. I know it sounds gross, but the leakage is the "stuff" that was inside of the cyst. It only happens in my right breast.

when i had nipple discharge it was due to a medication i was on elevating a chemical in my brain (i don't remember the name of the chemical) my doctor took me off the med and the discharge stopped

The only person who can tell exactly what your friends problem is, is the doctor. There are many things that can cause this. A blocked lymphatic duct, a blocked lacterifous (milk) duct, cysts, cancers and some women who have breast fed in the past will have a discharge is they squeeze the nipple. The pain is the concern here and she needs to make sure to keep her visits with the doctor and make sure its not anything serious. My best to your friend.

Well if her doctor has already told her, why are you asking people who are not doctors?

What color is the discharge? Is it spontaneous, or does it come out after expression? Those are important questions that her doctor should go over with her.

If it is clear, then, yes it could be from cysts.

If it is cloudy or green, it could be due to an infection.

If it is black, brown or red, she may need to have a mammogram, ultrasound or MRI. She may also need to have a test called a ductogram or galactogram.

Her best bet is to go to an OB/GYN who specializes in breast health, or a breast surgeon.
