Asthma issues when i come home from college? anyone else had to deal with this?!

Question: I've had asthma for 16 years, and i've never experienced what i am lately. Recently i came home for thanksgiving, from college which is in a higher altitude then my home. I had issues all week here, then then i went back i had a heavy cold like thing, when now looking back seemed to be me dealing with the asthma. Now on friday i came home and had asthma issues again. It's the same thing, Hard to breath, short breaths, coughing. this time i called the doc on the weekend and he gave me prednizone, and flovent... i got that last night, and this morning i feel ten times better, i'm just coughing stuff out of my lungs.

My question is to all those with asthma asking if there is anything known i can do about this. my doctor seems to think we can just deal with it when it happens. I go back to college in a few weeks and i don't want to have to deal with this with out my asthma doctor. Please give me your thoughts.

My parents got a dog a few years ago and I'm allergic to her. Lately whenever I go visit them my asthma will start acting up. When I went to see them at Thanksgiving I took Flovent for two weeks ahead of time and had no problems. Probably if you pre-treat with Flovent and maybe take an antihistamine like Claritin that will help prevent asthma and allergy symptoms.

Flovent takes a couple of weeks to kick in, so keep using it and take the prednisone and your symptoms will start improving.

I have lived with Asthma since I was born and about 4 years ago I had a real bad asthma attack that but me in the hospital for a week and was in ccu. The doctor I have put me on a medicine called Singular and it has worked wonders. It is an allergey and preventive med. In the past I have found that with asthma that allergerys are the main trigger and mold and dust. With taking Singular it is much better. Don't know if this will help but hope it does.

It sounds like your being exposed to an asthma trigger when you go home. If you can identify it and avoid it, you may not have as many symptoms. Knowing and avoiding your asthma triggers is the best non medication treatment for asthma.

If you have a rescue inhaler, keep it with you. You may need to use it more at home. If you are on a controller medication such as singular or a steroid inhaler, make sure you take it every day.
