Unless you are sexually active by age 16, your first vaginal exam can wait until you are 18. The doctor puts this instrument called a speculum in there which stretches the muscle apart so he can look at the walls of your vagina and your cervix. This is not painful, only slight discomfort when the speculum is opened. He then takes a swab that has a tiny brush on the end of it and collects a sample of the tissue from your cervix. This looks like a 6 inch Q-tip swab, only with a tiny brush like a mascara brush on the end. This is your first pap smear which then gives you a baseline (beginning) sample with which to compare all of the rest of your pap smears yearly. After this, he removes the speculum (I forgot to tell you it has a light attached to it so he/she can see everything better) and puts some K-Y jelly on their fingers and slides them into your vagina and then puts their other hand on your low abdomen. By doing this, they are checking the feel of your ovaries and making sure they too feel "normal" in size and shape. This will be your pap smear/pelvic exam that you need to do yearly. After this, you need to have a discussion with them about birth control because you do not need to get pregnant until you are married and they will give you a prescription for birth control pills.

It's called a pap smear, and you don't have to start having them until you're 18, unless you have sex before you turn 18.

It doesn't really hurt, mostly it's uncomfortable.

Its generally to test for abnormal cells that can cause cervical cancer (you might also want to google HPV - human papilloma virus) along with other gynacalogical issues. Whether you feel more comfortable with a female or male doctor is your choice. They are trained professionals and they do that sort of thing every day. Most likely your local GP will do these tests, but make sure its with a doctor you feel comforatble with. When you go for it, tell them it is your first one, and any fears you might have. You might also want them to talk you through what they are doing.

You only have to have it done every two years, unless the test comes back positive for something (like HPV) and if it does, your doctor will talk you through that.

The best thing to remember is to relax while they are doing it.

I'll get you some more info, I'll be back...

ok here's a few sites you might like to look at:
