Sebaceous Cyst?!

Question: I think these used to be known as boils?
I have had one for ages on my back, which has now become sore and swollen, I am reluctant to do anything about it because a colleague of mine who also had one received treatment with no local anesthetic here in Africa.
Can it wait for a couple of weeks when I go back to the UK?

i'd go to the doctor just to get a diagnosis...you don't have to agree to any treatment if you don't want to. they may be able to give you drugs to fight the infection and sort out the pain topically. find out for definite what it is then you can get a better plan for fixing it. it may be something completely different and it could make you really sick if it's left. good luck

im sure it can if it isnt too painful

Our lead guitar player had one on his inner thigh that got huge and sore. I told him of an old trick that my grandpa used on his eldest son. He took some white tape (the kind you use to bandage a cut) without any gauze or ointment and applied it right to the area. The white tape acts as a drawing agent and the boil came to a head and burst on its own. When it did the lead player said it was like the best feeling because the pressure and soreness went away. It then took a couple of weeks to heal with hydrogen peroxide soaked gauze taped over it... Give it a try. I couldn't handle the pain of that thing for long. I forgot to mention that the time it took from taping to breaking and draining was less than a day. It also sounds like it could be an ingrown hair.

ouch

Sebaceous cyst is not an emergency. But it has to be removed by minor surgery. If not removed it may get infected
Boil is an infection of the skin.Sebaceous cyst is a collection of sebum (oily substance) at the root of the hair follicle. In sebaceous cyst a punctum can be seen at the centre of the cyst.

Sounds like you have had a longstanding sebaceous cyst that has now become infected. This is different from a boil. It might be possible to delay surgical intervention with a course of antibiotics and then have the cyst removed later. However if it does not settle down with the antibiotics drainage may be unavoidable.

I don't think it's the same as a boil. I had one on the back of my neck and my doctor told me to leave it alone. It wasn't painful but was a nuisance and slowly got bigger. One day I touched it and found that it had started to discharge (didn't smell nice!) so I helped it along until it had all gone.
It should be OK to leave it for a while, but if it is swollen there's the possibility it could burst.

If its on the top of skin it is not a sebaceous cyst. I have a lump on my neck - under the skin, doctor said last march it was a sebaceous cyst and made hospital appointment, they done scan and biopsy, results inconclusive and yesterday the hospital told me they are sure its not cancer but want to do another scan and maybe remove it under general anaesthetic. I think yours is a boil.

I think you will be ok, but u might be in pain or discomfort.

I believe that you may have a condition called Hidradenitis Supprativa. It is a condition of re-occurring boils/ cysts/abscesses , that are often misdiagnosed as ingrown hairs, herpes, being unclean and folliculitis. This is a newly diagnosed skin condition , but there is a lot of info out there.
Here is a link :

If this sounds like it might be you, READ it, PRINT it out, and TAKE it to your DOC.
Its better to try to start treatment soon, it can spread over the body if left untreated. These boils can become quite large and painful. Sometimes even lasting for weeks or months , do not attempt to POP them they can then tunnel under your skin and spread all over the body. Most common areas are armpits, groin, binkni line, inner legs, and intimate places and basically anywhere that sweats and rub against clothing. Stress is a big inducer.

There is some support groups at MSN

and yahoo, and I am open for questions!
I have had this for 8 years, I was misdiagnosed for a LONG time, It was very embarrassing, painful and scary. I am just trying to help out so you don
