Horrible skin?!

Question: no matter how much i exfoliate and moisturise, i seem to have rough skin all over my legs and the back of my arms, i cant wear skirts and feel insanely jealous when i see girls walkin around with what seems effortlessly smooth and shiny pins!!
ive even resorted to using a pumise stone to get rid of all the bumps, which is very painful and not all that effective, these bumps also bleed sometimes when i shave my legs.
somebody please help me! i dont know what else to try!! does anyone else suffer from this?

Does this only happen in winter or does it happen in summer too?
Usually in the summertime the humidity keeps our skin from drying out but in the winter the cold harsh winds and freezing weather, not to mention our source of heat (dry heat) keeps our skin looking more like alligator skin. Quit exfoliating and using harsh chemicals to combat the bumps, you need to treat what's causing them and I believe that to be dehydration.

First off buy a humidifier or put water on the stove to give off steam to rehydrate the air in your house. Secondly switch to a non abrasive soap such as Dove or whatever you prefer but try to stick with soaps that have no or little scent. Thirdly moisturize your body after every bath while your skin is still damp and moisturize throughout the day so that it becomes second nature to do so. Fourthly and one of the most important things you can do is drink lots of water, water rehydrates your body and skin, it's one of the best things for your complexion in summer and winter.
One other thing that I do in the winter is...
About once a week or so before I climb into bed I glob lotion on my feet and put on my pair of soft fuzzy socks (I call them my lotion socks) and sleep in them. You can do this with your legs and a pair of tight fitting exercise pants and also your hands with some soft fuzzy gloves. You can cut the toes out of a long pair of socks to cover your arms and do the same with them.

If you don't notice a change in a week or so ask your family doctor about it. It could be something totally different. In the meantime if the bumps are bothering you try a paste of baking soda and water and just dot that on to the bumps, it will dry them out so be prepared for extra dry skin in those areas.

Maybe you could see a dermatologist who could advise you.

Using abrasive products on you skin is not helping, you really need to use a good moisturiser, I know a company which sells a really good product called ultra rich, you can order it online at www.essential-care.co.uk, they are an organic skincare co. which specialise in eczema and other problems, hope this helps

you should try using a grease based cream like e45, moisturisers only moisturise the outer skin and rubs off with clothing etc but e45 will moisturise deep down in to pores and doesn't rub off with clothes and it wont make your skin look greasy either

You need to see a doctor or a dermatologist about this. Some people have drier, rougher skin than others, but you shouldn't have bumps. If you have very coarse hair you may just have ingrown hairs. You should soak in a hot tub for 15 minutes, then shave with a sharp razor, using a sensitive skin shave lotion. Whatever you do, don't use the pumice stone, it is way too rough for your legs. Wait a while after shaving to put lotion on, and try a fragrance free lotion (try cetaphil).

If this doesn't help, do see a dermatologist.

First off, you might want to stop exfoliating. There is such a thing as irritating your skin. Especially if you had rough patches to start out with, and they've gotten bigger with your rounds of exfoliation and rubbing.

From what you've said, rough patches, arms and legs, you should check with your dermatologist to see if you have excema. It's a skin condition that causes your skin (especially in times of stress) to get crusty and rough in places. There are treatments available for it too. I'm not saying out and out that that's what you have, so caveat emptor.

You really should check with a dermatologist, and they will be able to find out what is causing you so much distress.

In the meantime, stop the harsh treatment of your skin-- it's a pretty vital organ.

Drink more water. I found Vaseline <the brand not the product> makes a new gel like product that is all natural and works really well. Try shaving your legs with that instead of soap - and also a sea salt scrub (with all natural oils) is a great product to use in the shower too.
Avoid all creams and oils that are petroleum based.

If it's oily skin use dial "gold" bar soap. If it is dry skin, use cetaphil soap & moistureing lotion (both are found @ any drug store or walmart w/out prescription.

Hi, I'm very sorry to hear about your problem. I am male, so I don't have quite the same problems as you! You don't say whether or not you've seen anyone who can actually tell you exactly what your skin problem is. I have psoriasis and at the moment am having UVL therapy (still waiting to see if it works). Go to your doctor and find out exactly what the problem is, and go from there. Treatment takes time, I know, but just be patient, and try not to compare yourself with other women.
Yours, very sympathetically.
