Dear Friend,
Usually, Hepatitis type C is diagnosed by a simple blood or fecal test. In addition to, your physician may ask you to do a X-ray exam or CT Scan to find out more about your liver dimensions, if palpation doesn't help. Some assaulting procedures such as biopsy may be helpful when there is a dysfunction suspicion.
You'd better to ask your practitioner about CAT Scan to ensure. Be strong enough to face to problems and down'em.
Take care,

Hep C can degrade the liver.

Hepatitis is a disease of the liver. . . any kind a, b, or c. So it is important to see the state of the liver at time of diagnosis and throughout the rest of the life of that patient.

If you have Hep C then the live IS affected. A cat scan might determine the extent of the damage.

I am not a medically trained person, but to me it sounds unusual to do such a scan if the Hep C is still 'active'; damage might still occur in future.

There abolutely could be something seriouly wrong with the liver, including cancer which is why they would want to do a CAT scan. It probably has sustained damage and they need to see how much.

Good Question: Hepatitis C is serious that makes your liver swell and stops it from working right. You can get it by sharing drug needles, getting pricked with a needle that has infected blood on it (hospital workers can get hepatitis C this way), sharing needles for drugs, having sex with an infected person, especially if you or your partner has other sexually transmitted diseases. Treatment is usually with a drug called peginterferon, usually in combination with the drug ribavirin. You may need surgery if you have hepatitis C for many years. Over time, hepatitis C can cause your liver to stop working. If that happens, you will need a new liver. The surgery is called a liver transplant. It involves taking out the old, damaged liver and putting in a new, healthy one from a donor.

Common symptoms are feeling tired, feel sick to your stomach, have a fever, loss of appetite, stomach pain, diarrhea. Some have dark yellow urine, light-colored stools, and or yellowish eyes and skin. Biopsy and catscans are common to check for infection and inflamation. The liver filters out poisons for your body and stores energy when you need it.

Hep. Is a diease of the liver. So of course they need to perform a scan. They also might do a biopsy.

before they order a scan they do a test call a TNF or AFP marker test. if it is higher than normal (checking for cancer cell activity, sorta like pre-tumor stage, they like to do a cat scan of the liver to make sure there are no tumors. after this test has an outcome (no nodules or cancer or tumors marked) then the next step is a biopsy of the liver.

these tests are all normal for those with hcv infection. i had one scan (even without the tnf or afp markers) and i had three post treatment biopsies (not a big deal). i also donated a piece of my liver via biopsy two years after successful treatment....my doctor was shocked! lol

I might also add that AFP or TNF markers can indicate cancer of the lung, ovary as well as other cancers.

good luck....your friend needs to jump on the chemo wagon to kill the virus that can cause liver cancer.....

also, keep in mind that many doctors do specific tests first for their own research of a particular disease. some follow guidlines instructed by the pharmacutical companies doing trials. (free medication is always good considering just the shot per week is about 1,000.00 dollars.)

earlier to treat, easier to beat!

I am 23 and have hep c and have had to have an ultrasound of my liver to make sure it looks good. everything was fine. they just needed to make sure. i think you are ok they just want to check and make sure
