Help, my doctor has just told me I might have to go on insulin for my diabetes?!

Question: my A1C is 8.4. It was at a 13.7 a year ago. I'm on Glucophage 1000mg twice a day and a glucotrol XL 5mg. For the first time my cholestrol is out of whack. The Bad cholestrol is 285 and the good cholestrol is at 35. All the doctor said was for me to cut the fat out of my diet. She did this lab when I was sick. Does that alter the tests any? Please give me some advice. I'm very scared because this is type 2 with genetic traits. I've seen the results of both of these conditions. I have had diabetes for 5 years and was controlling it with diet until a year ago.

It's possible that illness could affect cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is the body's repair substance, and an elevated level tends to indicate the presence of inflammation or disease.

The HDL level is a bit low. Improving blood sugar control will both decrease overall inflammation and will improve your HDL level.

I personally would dump any doctor who expected me to take Glucotrol, since it actually contributes to increased insulin resistance and pancreatic burnout, as well as increasing your cardiovascular risk.

You may have better luck with a low-carb (60-70 g per day), high-saturated fat diet, mostly whole foods rather than processed. Regular exercise, including weight training, will improve your insulin resistance and glycemic control. If you reduce carbs or increase exercise, you MUST tell your doctor, as the Glucotrol can cause hypoglycemia. (Your doctor will probably strongly oppose the low-carb diet, though. My doctor lectured me about the recommended ADA diet, but admitted that he follows the low-carb high-fat protocol to control HIS diabetes.)

I have read the simple Cinnamon added to your diet will help to lower sugar levels.

My doctor told me (and have heard it from friends whose doctors told them the same thing) that the longer you are a diabetic the bigger risk it is that you will end up on insulin. It happened to me. I was fine using glucophage a few times a day. Then it all started to change. My diet wasn't any worse than it had been, but the pills just weren't doing the job. We tried Byetta and that didn't work for me, so now I take 23 units of long lasting insulin every night and 1 Janumet pill each day. My glucose has been great. Of course, I still have to watch my diet, but I'm thankful it's not worse.

Eat less food more times in a day. Avoid oil & fat in your diet.

I have documentation to forward to you about a proven natural
product that is recognized by the FDA and found in the medical PDR. It works at your body's cellular level increasing your levels of Glutathione. It is very well documented with tons of testimonials of people diagnosed with diabetes that have benefited greatly from this.

Welcome to a very small club of totally aggravated peoples!!

I have been on insulin for 4 years now along with my Metformin ER.

Life is much easier on Lantus or Levemire insulin. The needles are now so fine you can barely feel them! 31g is almost invisible!!

You have to understand that type 2 is a progressive disease! It progresses at its own speed in each of us. We can be going down the road just fine, thank you, keeping our glucose in tight control, when WHAM!! it is now out of control.

Our ancestors had several major problems in treating this disease. In the dark ages (15 years ago) people didn't have personal glucometers! they didn't have all the good oral meds we have now! doctors just told them to watch the sugar! And for sure they didn't have all the choices in insulin therapies we now have access to!

Most type 2 diabetics will eventually be on insulins as the pancreas quits working! this does not mean that we are now type 1! that is from totally different causes and will never respond to what type 2 does!

Don't be afraid of insulin therapy!! You might be started on a low dosage, then increasing it to where it is helping you to control your glucose without the weight gain!! This is good!!! Good glucose control will help with the cholesterol problem you currently have!!!

Avoid sugar and high amounts of carbohydrates. Eat balanced meals at regular times. Whole grain carbs are good. Losing weight helps control diabetes.
