Does anyone know why you can hear your heart beating sometimes?!

Question: Earlier today while I was standing in a line at a store my heart started beating faster and I could feel it going pretty good. I was not nervous or anything, just bored. Then tonight after a couple of beers and some food I was relaxing on the couch and could hear my heart beating really loud. I feel completely fine and am in good health. My blood pressure is always great when I get it checked. Any ideas why this might happen? It has happened every once and then all of my life and I don't think it's a big deal but just curious........... Serious answers only please.

These are called palpatations - heart beats that you are aware of. Most of the time they are perfectly normal. You are just one of the lucky people that can enjoy the sounds of their heart.

I listen to my heartbeat every night. What's weird is that I can take my pulse without having to place a finger on a pulse point, I can hear it. I can do the same thing with my blood pressure. I can hear the changes that they listen for with a stethoscope, without the scope. It freaks the nurses out when I announce my bp before they do.

Be sure to mention it to your doc on your next visit, always better to be sure that it's nothing to worry about.

Reasons for a pounding or noticeable heart rate are: caffeine, other stimulants like decongestants (they get the heart pretty keyed up), and stress or natural adrenaline.
Another cause is heart disease or abnormal conduction.
If you don't think any of the first 3 answers apply, get yourself checked by a doc!
