I JUST had pinworms?!

Question: I had pinworms over the weekend and I took the pill on Monday for treatment. I was fine Tuesday and now I noticed them again today. Can I get it by using the same razor I did when I had pinworms. How long does it take for them to completely go away with the pill? It was the mebendzole chewable.

Give it another day. It takes a day or so for the medication to actually kill them. If you see some live ones in the next day or so, call your doctor - he may want to treat you again. You do not get them from razors.

Pinworms are not transmissible via razors. Some thoughts:

1. The medication did not kill all the pinworms. You may need another dose.
2. You have been reinfected. Your entire family, or whoever you live with, should be treated. Someone else may have reinfected you.
3. You have been reinfected. Pinworm eggs can live on surfaces such as bedding and towels, where they can end up in your mouth again. Wash your bedding, towels, and underwear in the hottest water possible and dry them in a hot dryer.
4. You have been reinfected. Pinworm eggs can also become airborne and can end up being swallowed or inhaled. You may want to vacuum the house and carefully discard the vacuum bag. You may also want to wipe household surfaces with a disinfectant.

Pinworms often reoccur. They are highly contagious and can be very persistent. As you probably know, you swallow the pinworm eggs; the pinworms hatch and live in your intestines; the pinworms exit through your rectum and lay eggs, which you get under your fingernails by scratching (pinworms have a sharp point which causes itching); then you put your hands in your mouth and the cycle starts again. I know, yuck. But about 20% of the population has pinworms at any given time.
